Key Largo: Chapter One

The wind whipped through Sandy’s hair as she looked out the window from the top of the lighthouse, her dogs at her feet and her cat sitting on the rail next to her. It was a clear and warm summer night and she was enjoying the smells of the salty sea air. It was to be a clear night, so she was not worried about the incoming boats. She gazed up at the stars, there were hundreds of them. She lay down on the balcony and tried to connect the constellations, she could hear the waves crashing against the rocks close to shore.

She had been working with the lobsters all day and it had been a sunny day. Her rolled up jeans were still a little damp from working in the water, but the warm breeze didn’t bother her. Sandy began to doze, but finally stood up, her red-checkered shirt was rippling in the wind. She began to walk downstairs and as she descended, it grew warmer and warmer. It was the warmest time of the year in Key Largo, which also meant there were higher chances for hurricanes. Many hotels in the Keys closed down during hurricane season, for obvious reasons, so there weren’t many tourists around.

Sandy walked across to her cottage, she went through the door, letting it slam behind her. Soon, ready for bed, she slept. The windows open, letting in the breeze.

With the rising sun, Asta and Snowy were on top of Sandy’s bed, trying to wake her up for breakfast. She rolled out of bed and looked out her window. Walking into the kitchen, she put food down for the dogs and soon Remington walked in for his food. Sherlock, the other Orange Tabby, rubbed against her leg. Soon everyone was fed, including Sandy, and she went outside to the lobster yard.

All morning, she packed up a barrel with fresh lobsters and hauled it onto her truck. She drove into town and to the local restaurant.

“Here’s your batch Abe!” Sandy called into the back.

Abe was the owner of a good, local restaurant, popular with the tourists. “Thanks Sandy, I’ll help you unload them.” Sandy and Abe soon had the lobsters unloaded. “It’s almost two o’clock, do you want a snack Sandy?” Abe asked, wiping his forehead. “No, I’m gonna get back to ring the bell. Thanks anyway.” Sandy waved and was soon back in her truck.

Pulling up to the cottage, Sandy opened the door, letting Asta, Snowy, Sherlock, and Remington out. She then walked over to the lighthouse, climbing the stairs, she looked out over the sea. It was mostly clear, but it looked like a storm was coming in. In either case, she had to ring the lighthouse bell at three-thirty. Ringing it, the sound traveled across the sea and throughout Key Largo. She was answered by a warm breeze and she inhaled the saltwater air!
